Aahana Kumra Says 'Storytelling In Times Of Dhurandhar Is Very Brave': Audience Is Smart, Everything Is...

Actor Aahana Kumra feels the current wave of Indian storytelling demands far more courage and clarity. Speaking about recent projects and industry shifts, Aahana said new content leaves little room for safe choices, as audiences now expect depth, honesty and real engagement from every story and character they meet on screen.

Reflecting on this change in the content ecosystem, Aahana linked it to sharper audience awareness. Viewers research themes, compare narratives and fact-check portrayals almost instantly. That scrutiny, Aahana suggested, forces creators to treat stories with greater responsibility, since anything that feels artificial is quickly challenged across platforms.

Storytelling, Dhurandhar and audience expectations in Indian storytelling

When asked how storytelling is evolving for actors, Aahana replied, "I think it's very brave in today's times. And you have to be brave. You can't avoid going deeper anymore. People really want to engage with stories at a deeper level now." Aahana said this approach shapes choices in projects like the upcoming show Dhurandhar.

She highlighted one dialogue from Dhurandhar to explain this shift. "Like in Dhurandhar, Aditya has this fantastic line. We're not skirting the line anymore." For Aahana, that line captures how creators now tackle complex issues more directly, instead of softening them to appear comfortable or polished for viewers.

Storytelling, honesty and a level playing field in storytelling

Aahana explained why any attempt to mask reality often fails with today's audiences. "Audiences today are extremely smart. Everything is available at their fingertips, on YouTube and across platforms. So if you try to present a glorified version that doesn't truly exist, people will research it and call it out." She stressed that this pushes teams to stay honest.

She added that this environment also changes how people work together on sets and writers' rooms. "That's why storytelling today needs to be honest and brave. It's also about being on a level playing field. It doesn't matter if someone is younger or older. You approach it with the mindset that you're here to learn. And if you learn it right, you can do it just as well as anyone else. It's all about perspective."

Storytelling, production shift and Working Panda Films

Aahana has widened this perspective by foraying into production with her Mumbai-based banner Working Panda Films. The move, Aahana said, is reshaping how scripts, budgets and teams appear from the other side of the table, beyond the narrower focus that often comes with only acting in projects.

Sharing this contrast, Aahana observed, "As an actor, you move within a certain circle. But as a producer, the journey becomes much larger. And I'm sure that journey will be even more exciting." For Aahana, producing adds another layer to understanding market needs and creative risks.

Storytelling and Content India 2026 industry dialogue on storytelling

Aahana spoke on the sidelines of Content India 2026, an industry meet hosted by Dish TV India. The three-day gathering drew more than 700 voices from platforms, studios and international markets, with sessions focused on both creative choices and the business side of content.

The event, according to Aahana, brought together major streaming and technology players in one venue. "I have to say, Content India, organized by Dish TV India, is one of the big platforms where everyone comes together, whether it's Netflix, Amazon or Google. These are the platforms where key decisions are being shaped, and you have production house heads and industry leaders all speaking on one stage."

Aahana said such gatherings help professionals at every career stage absorb practical lessons. "It's the kind of place where, if you really pay attention, you take something back from each one of them. It adds so much, especially when you're listening to people who've had such long careers. There's also a reason why they remain so humble."

She noted that many senior executives and producers present have previously worked with Aahana during her acting projects. "I've had a very different equation with many of them over the years as an actor, and I've worked with most of them. A lot of them recognise me, and I've shared that professional relationship with them," Aahana said, describing the familiar yet evolving dynamic.

The response to Aahana turning producer has been encouraging, according to the actor. "But what's really nice now is that when I tell them I'm producing, they're genuinely happy and excited about it. They often say, 'Now you'll understand the challenges actors face, and what the market really demands.' All my years in acting, I feel like this shift is giving me a whole new perspective."

Aahana’s comments underline how Dhurandhar, Working Panda Films and Content India 2026 are linked by one thread. For Aahana, every role, whether on camera or behind it, circles back to fearless, honest storytelling, and to learning from peers in an industry where informed audiences keep raising expectations.
