Set in the dusty lanes of Palayamkottai, Maareesan begins with Dayalan (Fahadh Faasil), a small-time thief freshly out of prison. His life takes a strange turn when he breaks into a house and finds Velayudham (Vadivelu) tied up, alongside a goat. Claiming to suffer from Alzheimer’s, Velayudham says his son abandoned him and promises money in exchange for help. What starts as a quirky setup quickly spirals into a journey filled with secrets, manipulation, and unexpected bonds. Vadivelu sheds his usual comic timing to deliver a deeply layered performance, reminiscent of Maamannan yet more grounded. As Velayudham, an aging man caught between fading memories and mysterious truths, he effortlessly balances innocence with unease. His scenes from ATM confusion to moments of heartbreak resonate with warmth and sadness. This is a career-defining comeback with purpose and weight.

Fahadh Faasil proves yet again why he's one of the most versatile actors in Indian cinema. As Dayalan, he shifts seamlessly between sly thief and reluctant companion, never overplaying the emotion. His silences speak volumes, especially in the film’s darker turns. Following his impactful role in Vettaiyan, this is another reminder of his command over restrained, riveting performances.

Yuvan Shankar Raja’s music does more than accompany Maareesan; it guides it. Breezy guitar strings colour the road-trip moments, while haunting layers creep in during key reveals. His background score magnifies the tension and heightens the emotional depth, becoming a character in itself. Few composers balance mood and melody like Yuvan, and this is one of his most mature works in recent years.

With a tight screenplay by Krishnamoorthy, the film benefits from its minimal yet effective ensemble. Kalaichelvan Sivaji’s grounded cinematography captures both the intimacy of interiors and the vastness of the road. Editor Sreejith Sarang keeps the pacing sharp without losing atmosphere. Supporting actors like Vivek Prasanna, Siddhartha (as Vadivelu’s wife in flashbacks), and Kovai Sarala add layers without overwhelming the narrative. Even producer Thenappan features in a cameo that fits right in.
